Standard Ground Protection Mat

What the standard mat does

A standard HDPE ground protection mat is a single 4×8 ft sheet — the classic 4x8 ground protection mat — you lay straight onto grass, mud, or made-up ground to carry wheel and foot traffic without churning the surface into ruts. These plastic ground protection mats, also sold as ground protection sheets, spread each load across the full area, so a vehicle that would sink into soft ground rides over it instead. When the job moves on you lift the mats, hose them down, and use them again — most fleets get years out of a set.

Load spreading, not ground improvement

It pays to be clear about what a mat does and does not do. It distributes load; it does not turn soft ground into hard standing. On a competent, level sub-grade one mat takes typical site vehicles comfortably. Over very soft or waterlogged ground you size up to a thicker heavy-duty ground protection mat or an extra-heavy bog mat and accept that bearing capacity comes from the soil, not the plastic — so the figures we quote assume an evenly prepared sub-grade.

Handling and connection

At roughly 36–39 kg the mat is a two-person lift on the moulded hand-holds, so a crew can deploy a walkway or a short access run with no plant on site. The reversible dual-sided tread lets you flip a worn face to renew grip and about double service life. Optional bolt-through hand-holes pin mats edge to edge into a continuous, shift-free surface for longer roadways.

Where it earns its keep

The everyday jobs are construction site access, utility and cable works, and temporary parking on grass for events and open days.
